Gameplay
The House of the Dead 4 features a number of very similar, but new, gameplay elements from previous games. The basic gameplay is the same, but more emphasis is placed on a variety of light guns (which are used to shoot zombies) and guns from the Gunslinger and Saw characters, a new feature that can be used as both a pistol and machine gun. Gunslinger, Saw, or another firearm may be equipped with an iron bullet which when fired will send a powerful shock wave through the enemies in its path. The iron bullet can be fired continuously, allowing the player to bypass obstacles and to defeat the enemies without suffering damage. Shooting the iron bullet will charge up the iron bullet gauge.
There is a very minor difference in gameplay. During one of the new levels in the Story Mode, there is a part that the player has to shoot the enemies and make them light up like Christmas lights. The player can pick up several of these enemies and attach them to the head of a severed zombie head, which can then be used as a melee weapon.
The House of the Dead 4 also features a full head tracking, using the head position in the game to help determine what the player is going to shoot, even with the character's Guncon. This allows the game to recognize when the player is shooting a target that the character is currently looking at, and being accurate in time and in light of the head position of the character, the game will attempt to determine whether the shot hit the target. The version of the game released in Japan includes a graphical difference, as the targets are visible at all times, even when the character is looking the opposite way, due to the fact that it is used to find the right head to attach.
Similar to the previous games, the House of the Dead 4 features several different enemies and bosses. The enemies include many of the same designs from the previous games, but with the addition of two more enemies, the Berserker and the Plunge Killer, who were also introduced in the Sega Ages version. There is also a new enemy named the Stalker, who is a more vulnerable enemy. The bosses are mainly the same, including the Slow Worm boss, but there are a few new bosses as well. The Saw boss is called the Bloody Saw, and the Gunslinger boss is called the Bloody Grizzly.
